Getting started

Sometimes getting started with something is the hardest thing. It is scary – and exciting – to step into those transition times that force you to start something new.

Growth is where it is uncomfortable, is what they say, but I can’t quite say that uncomfortable feels particularly fun. At least not all the time, some of the time maybe, but certainly not every day for an extended period of time.

So how to get started anyway? One great way to do it is to simply sit down and think of that very simple first little step in the direction you want to take. And then do it. However clumsy, however imperfect. Just walk that first step and see where it takes you!

So here it is my first step: I have been thinking about, reading, listening to podcasts and talking with so many of my friends and business partners over the past 20 years. And some themes keep coming up for many of us:

  • We don’t feel like we have equal access to opportunity
  • We don’t feel like we belong
  • We don’t feel like we are accepted without having to go through extra lengths
  • We feel unseen and unappreciated
  • We don’t feel like we are good enough or deserving of something
  • We don’t think we have what it takes to be successful at that new thing

It is quite hard to get started with leading anything if those are the emotions that come up for you in thinking about how to get started, and often this is where it ends. With a nice idea of “someday I’ll get started” rather than with taking that very first step. So here it is: my first step in blogging about my journey towards that next new thing. That journey to walk from idea and vision to finding a relevant solution. I look forward to your thoughts and contributions. And it makes me smile to take those first real steps into that unknown future. I am sure I’ll learn a lot. I want to have fun with it.

And I want to do it with you, join me. Share your thoughts and experiences with me. I really want to understand what you have faced when you got started with something new. Whether that is your own startup, your new leadership role. Your first senior leadership role. What you learned from coaching people. What you have seen work in building strength and empowering people. There are many ways to lift people. Let’s work together to make it happen! Please reach out and let’s schedule a zoom call. I’m looking for people who want to share their story with me.
